Traditions create memories that make Christmas extra special. Now that my oldest son is three and a half, we are making extra efforts this year to incorporate some old family traditions as well as create some new ones of our own. We started this week with "The Elf on the Shelf." The way this works is Santa sends a special helper elf to your home where he sits in a special place and monitors their behavior, good and bad. My son named ours "Willy." Every night, Willy reports back to Santa all the happenings of the day. When he returns in the morning, Willy finds a brand new spot to sit and the kids have to find him as soon as they get up. The rules are: they can't touch him, and he can't talk to them, but they can talk to Willy and share all of their Christmas wishes with him. On Christmas day, Willy goes back to the north pole, only to return next year after Thanksgiving. Our hope is that our Elf on the Shelf will not only promote stellar behavior for a whole month but also offer us a special glimpse into the minds and hearts of our children at this magical time of year.
